Tips For Stopping Smoking Or Using Smokeless Tobacco

When you first quit smoking cigarettes, you begin to feel the first signs of withdrawal, and you think, "this is going on forever", but it is not.  The first 24 hours are the worst, just relax and utilize the supplies you have on hand for stopping.  After 3 days almost all of the nicotine in your body will have been eliminated.  What you feel after that is the effects of the habit itself.  After 3 weeks the effects of the habit will disappear, unless you have been smoking for a long time, but at any rate, the effects of withdrawal will be much less after 3 weeks.

f you have smoked for 5 years or less, you should have won your battle at this time.  You may still need the hard candies and gum occaisionally, until the habit itself has been completely eliminated.  You should be over the urgent craving for a smoke.  If you have smoked longer than 5 years you will also have eliminated the nicotine from your body, and you will find that your need to smoke becomes less and less as each day passes.  So you can see that there are steps leading to quitting smoking, and these steps will be much easier than you think.

Tips On Stopping Smoking By Using The Nicotine Patches

If you have smoked longer than 5 years you might consider using the nicotine patches.  The process is longer, but much easier, as the patches release a continuous dose of nicotine into your body.  The strength of the patches are gradually reduced until they are supplying very little nicotine.  At that point you should be able to discontinue using them, and quit for good. Another advantage of the patches is that altough the time needed to quit is extended, and you are taking in small doses of nicotine, you arn't getting the nicotine from smoking, so your habit is being defeated even while you are wearing the patches.  I tried nicotine gum and the method of delivery isn't as precisely controlled as with the patches.  I thought nicotine gum tasted bad too. You should check with your doctor to be sure you have no problems that would prevent using the patch.

This process is not without some discomfort.  I thought of it as the recovery from a disease.  I kept telling myself that I had been sick, but was getting better with each passing day, and would soon be well.  This definitely won't be the case if you wait until you begin to see unfavorable health effects before starting to quit. Try to see yourself stopping tobacco use, and obtaining your goal.

Set A Date And Stop

Try to pick a time when you won't be under a great deal of stress for 3 or 4 days, before you stop smoking.  Stick to your date, and once started, don't weaken.  If you remain smoke free you will be over that habit shortly.  If something happens and you do fall off the wagon, don't be too hard on yourself, just start over again right away.  Each time you slip up just increases your overall pain, as you will have to start over from scratch to get past those first 3 days, and you may loose your determination to quit, so don't do that.

This is an international website, and many people who visit it use english as a second language, so I am going to work real hard at using the simplest wording I can.  Please be patient with me.

If you decide to use the nicotine patch, you should seek your doctors advice as to what brand to use, and he may be able to give you extra help.

Pick A Goal That Is Important To You

Keep Your Goal In Mind

Stay focused on obtaining your goal and don't let negative thoughts cloud your mind.  You can replace the need for a smoke with chewing gum or you can suck on a hard candy.  I found that butter scotch helped the most, the flavor seemed to simulate the taste of a cigarette.  Everyone's taste is different, find something you like.

You will find that your taste will change, and your food will begin to taste better.  If you use food to satisfy urges try to choose a low calorie snack as you can put on some extra weight if you aren't careful.  You can find some hard candies and gum that are sugar free.

Your sense of smell will also improve, and if you have had sinus problems, you may find that your sinus problem will get better.

I had suffered a lot from acid reflux and digestive problems and those conditions also improved after several months of not smoking.  All of these conditions come on so slowly you tend to ignore them, but it is a real relief when they go away.

Please don't give your friends who are still smoking a hard time.  If we help you, and they ask for advice, send them here.  If they don't ask for advice, don't condem them.

Put your plan into action and quit smoking cigarettes

The process is pretty much the same whether you use the nicotine patch to quit smoking, or quit cold turkey.  Keep your unopened pack of cigarettes and matches in your shirt pocket or purse.  Always keep plenty of hard candy or gum on hand to use when you feel the desire to smoke.  Try to vary these supplies so you won't get tired of the taste.

It all boils down to having the determination to be able to suffer the pangs of smoking withdrawal for a few days, and maintainin a positive mental attitude.  Again, the first 3 days are the hardest.  After that your discomfort should be much less.

I thought about the process of quitting a bit, and decided that it was similar to recovering from an illness or injury. I was experiencing discomfort, but I knew that my discomfort would soon come to an end, and then I would be well. I found that this exercise was very helpful. I knew that if I slipped up my illness would return in force, and I would have to start my recovery period over again from the beginning. If I could relax and bear my pain for a few days I would be well, once and for all times. That is the truth of it. You simply have to make up your mind to bear the discomfort of quitting for a few days, and you will have won.

You will also find that you get more work done, as you will no longer have to stop for a smoke now and then.  If you end up with some spare time try to develop a new interest or skill.  It is best try to avoid things that cause you extra stress for awhile.  So you see, while it is a bit of trouble to quit smoking, there are a lot of benefits you will enjoy more than smoking.
